The City of Upper Arlington, Ohio, recently partnered with PipeAid to enhance its Capacity, Management, Operation, and Maintenance (CMOM) Program through Ai-powered sewer inspection analysis. The City contracted a third-party vendor to collect CCTV footage of its sanitary sewer system—approximately 70,000 linear feet—without defect coding, reducing initial data acquisition costs.

PipeAid was then used to analyze the footage, automatically identifying defects such as cracks, fractures, breaks, roots, and deposits. The results were integrated into the City’s ArcGIS Online system, delivering two GIS output layers with NASSCO PACP attribution: one for pipe segments and another for individual observations. All data was reviewed for accuracy and completeness to ensure seamless integration into the City’s asset management workflows.

Results and Benefits

Cost-Effective Data Collection: By decoupling video capture from defect coding, the City reduced upfront inspection costs while maintaining high-quality analysis.

  • Ai-Driven Accuracy: Automated defect identification ensured consistent, reliable results across the entire dataset.

  • GIS Integration: The City transitioned from raw video to actionable GIS layers, enabling better visualization and planning.

  • CMOM Program Support: The enhanced data supports proactive maintenance and long-term infrastructure planning.

Looking Ahead

The project is currently underway and is expected to be completed within 180 days of award. With Ai accelerating data processing and improving accuracy, the City of Upper Arlington is taking a forward-thinking approach to sewer infrastructure management.
